THE WARSAW UPRISING

INTRODUCTION

The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army to liberate Warsaw from occupying German forces. The rebellion was timed to coincide with the approach of the Soviet Union's Red Army towards the eastern suburbs of the city while the Germans retreated. The Soviet advance stopped abruptly, however, which enabled the Germans to regroup and demolish the city while inflicting horrific casualties on the Polish resistance, which fought on for 63 days with little outside support.

The Uprising was the largest single military effort undertaken by any European resistance movement during World War II. Warsaw was finally liberated from German control on 17 January 1945 by the Red Army and the First Polish Army—although by this time, 85% of the buildings in Warsaw had been destroyed, and at least 150,000 Polish civilians had been killed in the fighting or executed summarily by the Germans.
