ULYSSES S. GRANT DAY

ST. LOUIS, MO. April 28, 2014 - St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay has declared May 3, 2014 to be "ULYSSES S. GRANT DAY" in the City of St. Louis. The Proclamation is an acknowledgment that St. Louis played a key role in Grant's life and the development of his character, as St. Louis was home to Grant and his family during many of the General's formative years, and during the time he occupied the White House.

The Ulysses S. Grant Association, based at Mississippi State University, is holding its national annual meeting in St. Louis the weekend of May 3-4, 2014. The weekend coincides with the U. S. Grant Symposium, which will be capped off by an address by the Association's Executive Director John F. Marzsalek, PhD, at 3:00 p.m. on May 3, at the St. Louis Public Library's Central Library at Thirteenth and Olive Streets. Dr. Marzalek's talk is presented by Lindenwood University. His talk covers the friendship and working relationship of Grant and fellow General William T. Sherman.

The U. S. Grant Symposium also features an address by Douglas D. Scott, PhD, sponsored by the Missouri History Museum. Dr. Scott's talk, "Ulysses S. Grant: The Archeological Record," is at 1:00 p.m. on May 3 in Lee Auditorium at the History Museum in Forest Park. Dr. Scott, known as the "Battlefield Detective," explored the Grant sites in St. Louis and the site of Grant's first battle in the Mexican War, near Brownsville, Texas, during his 30-plus year career with the National Park Service. He now heads the American Institute of Battlefield Archaeology.

The U. S. Grant Symposium concludes on Sunday, May 4. Bellefontaine Cemetery is conducting tours of the cemetery in the morning. In the afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Campbell House Museum (Fifteenth and Locust Streets, downtown), an escorted bus tour visits the Campbell House, the Eugene Field House and the DeMenil Mansion, and tracks "The Footsteps of Ulysses S. Grant" from downtown, through Soulard to the DeMenil area. The tour is organized by Renegade Tours of St. Louis.

All Symposium events are free to the public, except the bus and home tour. More information is available here.

P.S. Sunday, April 27, 2014, was General Grant's Birthday--his 192nd.

Or, you can click “Select” (next to “USA”) and select a state of interest. Go ahead and select “Missouri”.

On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a list of databases containing Missouri-specific records. The list is organized by category:

* Missouri Census & Voter Lists
* Missouri Birth, Marriage, & Death
* Missouri Military
* Missouri Immigration & Travel
* Missouri Newspapers & Publications
* Missouri Pictures

LITTLE WARS

INTRODUCTION

Yes, my young friends, there was a time back in the Dark Ages (pre-1990 by your definition) when we old folks didn’t play games on computers. You may not believe this, but we didn’t have computers—-well, we did, but the smallest one filled an entire room, meaning it was not portable by anyone’s definition…

Because of this lack of computers, the games we played involved playing cards and/or board games. That might seem quaint to you young people, but we actually had a lot of fun playing such games. Why, I remember a game of Risk in grad school where we had to chug a beer each time we lost a country—-err, but I digress…

The mention of Risk brings us around to today’s subject: wargames-— preferably, such games played on boards using miniature soldiers and other game pieces. There are people (mostly old guys my age, I’ll admit) who put a lot of time and effort into playing/creating such games. The books in the following list can provide you with more information about the fascinating world of wargames and wargamers, one of whom was H.G. Wells—yes, that H.G. Wells, the Time Machine/War of the Worlds guy. Wells and his club buddies played a war game using miniature artillery pieces that actually fired (see his book, Little Wars, below).

Notes: I’ve included a few books on “little wars,” that is, smaller-scale conflicts like the Spanish-American War or the Zulu War of 1879 in this list. They can be less daunting starting points for prospective wargamers.

If you would like to search the SLPL Catalog for additional books on this subject, use the Subject term war games. Doing an All Fields search using the following terms can reveal additional items of interest to the wargames player/creator:

• battles strategy
• battles tactics
• battles maps
• little war

I haven’t played war games in a long time, but creating this blog post has certainly whetted my appetite…

U.S. GRANT SYMPOSIUM

ST. LOUIS, MO. April 22, 2014 - Ulysses S. Grant's St. Louis roots will once again be celebrated the first weekend of May 2014. After previous events held in April as part of the Greater St. Louis Humanities Festival, The U.S. Grant Symposium will continue on May 3rd and 4th with new lectures and tours focused on St. Louis' favorite military son and the history that connects him to the city.

The May session of the Symposium will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Ulysses S. Grant Association from Mississippi State University. Executive Director of the Association and Mississippi State Professor Emeritus, John F. Marszalek, will give an address, sponsored by Lindenwood University, at the Central Library on May 3rd. "Warriors of the New Warfare, Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman" will focus on the bond that formed between the two generals during the war, and how this bond played a key role in both the success of the Union and the making of two heroes.

Also on May 3rd, Douglas D. Scott, known as one of the founders of battlefield archeology, will present an archeology forum entitled, "Ulysses S. Grant: The Archeological Record," both sponsored by and hosted at the Missouri History Museum. His lecture will focus on how archeological evidence can illuminate the past, particularly in terms of Grant's life and career in this area.

Events continue on May 4th with guided tours of Bellefontaine Cemetery and a "Footsteps of Grant" Bus Tour. Bellefontaine Cemetery is home to numerous Civil war grave sites, both Union and Confederate, as well as the burial site of Grant's in-laws. The Footsteps of Grant Bus Tour, led by Renegade Tours, will take participants through three historic homes: Campbell House Museum, The Eugene Field House, and the Chatillon-DeMenil Mansion. Along the way, guest tour guide Gregory Wolk, Executive Director of Missouri's Civil War Heritage Foundation and author of Friend and Foe: A Tour Guide to Missouri's Civil War, will discuss the footprints Grant left throughout the Downtown and Soulard neighborhoods.

The May weekend of the U.S. Grant Symposium is largely free, with the exception of the bus tour, which will cost $35 a person, with an option to purchase a copy of Friend and Foe Alike for an additional $10 (a $28.95 retail value). A full description of events along with ticket requests can be found on the internet at symposium.mocivilwar.org.

THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC

INTRODUCTION

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. She carried 2,224 passengers and crew. The sinking caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service. It was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, her naval architect, Andrews was among those lost during the sinking.
